Projects

Greenchem research is focused on production of specific target molecules in two application areas: 'Coatings and Lubricants' and 'Consumer Care and Cleaning'. The research work is divided into 4 projects that covers both application areas while innovation systems analysis forms the fifth project as described in the figure below:

 

 

1. Biocatalysis development

Biocatalysis development involves optimization of biocatalytic synthesis of the different chemicals. The product samples are also provided to the industrial partner(s) for evaluation. In case the product does not meet the test requirements, an alternative candidate is proposed (by the industry). When the right product is obtained, optimal conditions for an environmentally benign process and biodegradability of the product are determined before transferring the data to Project 3 and 4

2. Biocatalyst development and production

Biocatalyst development and production deals with selection of suitable biocatalysts for the processes being studied in Project 1. This is done by screening from microorganisms and environment samples followed by further evolution in the laboratory by mutagenesis techniques. The production of the enzyme is then done in a suitable microbial production system.

3. Process technology

Process technology uses the data generated from Project 1 to design a whole bioprocess in collaboration with the industrial partner(s) relevant for the particular product. The important parameters that will be investigated include: control of water activity (e.g. during synthesis of alkanolamide, acrylate), controlled addition of hydrogen peroxide (e.g. epoxide synthesis), product isolation, possibility for in situ recovery, process economics. The process data will be passed on to Project 4.

4. Environmental systems analysis

Environmental systems analysis involves life cycle assessments of the processes and target compounds with help of life cycle inventory data from both the biotechnology projects and the industrial partners. Environmental assessments of the various biomass raw material options will use a broader life cycle approach, including both emissions from technical systems and biological systems. Furthermore, important strategies that can improve the introduction of new technologies/products into different sectors will be suggested as a part of studies concerning the innovation system
